Princess Sofia Trophy - A successful organisation in an edition with a high number of races sailed |
PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN-(25-3-2005) This edition of the Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía – Madrid 2012 has seen a high number of races sailed, up to 45 races in one day. The light winds were present this year instead of the strong force 4-5 winds usual during the spring dates of this international regatta. Easter has arrived early this year but the organisers of the 36 Trofeo SAR Princesa Sofía have made good use of the breezes offering an event with the level required by an ISAF Grade 2 regatta.
A success that proves Palma’s capacity to organise the 2012 Olympic regatta if the nation’s capital is selected as host city of the Games. Once again, Madrid 2012, has given its support and sponsorship to the Sofia aware of its excellent organisation skills, the best advertising for their candidature.
This 36th edition of the Sofía is determining for Madrid 2012. The IOC will announce on 6 July the host city of the 2012 Olympic Games.
Therefore, the IOC –and specially its President, Paul Henderson, former ISAF President – have been watching closely the development of the racing in the Bay of Palma, under the organisation of the Federación Balear de Vela, Real Federación Española de Vela, Club Náutico El Arenal, Club Marítimo San Antonio de la Playa, Real Club Náutico de Palma and Escuela de Vela Calanova.
The Sofia has been up to the expectations. Although only one race could be sailed on the first day in the Yngling, Dragon, Laser and Laser Radial, due to the lack of wind in the other racing areas, the schedule of races has been completed over the rest of the week. Some classes even sailed 4 races in one day. A total of 45 races were sailed on Wednesday and Thursday. The numbers speak for themselves.
